POSTED BY LEE MEREDITH, SEPTEMBER 04 2008 04:56 PM | PERMALINK

I just discovered a semi-new knitting website I have to share with you! It's called MetaPostModernKnitting (aka MPMK) and the creators describe the site as "a celebration of fashion-forward and avant-garde knitting." From the about page: "We want to bring you knitting patterns, trend analysis, and news that represents the more artistic, unconventional and forward-thinking realm of knitting." They release an issue full of free patterns and more two times a year (Spring/Summer and...

Not only is Penelope Cruz an Oscar nominated actress, but she's also designer. Along with her sister, Monica Cruz, they've launched their own clothing line, Mango. This week, they debut their fall collection and this sweater modeled by Penelope is defintely the most eye catching. Want to make your own Mango style turtleneck? Try Jalie 2805, Burda 7742 or 7747,or Kwik Sew 3455. Be sure to pair one of these patterns up with a fabulous sweater knit which can be found at online retailers...

  • Weekly DIY Roundup: Hair Accessories!

POSTED BY LEE MEREDITH, AUGUST 15 2008 03:28 PM | PERMALINK

I'm thinking about cutting my hair short, like really short, shorter than it's ever been, which would mean no more pulling it back every day to get it out of my face. So I'm thinking, at least until I get used to the new 'do, I'll need lots of headbands and clippy things to help me adjust. This roundup wasn't as successful as I'd hoped it would be, not many hair projects out there that I like, but I did find a few high quality tutorials, starting with these beaded bobby pins by The Crafty Chica. Perfect...

  • Weekly DIY Roundup: Reusable Shopping Bags!

POSTED BY LEE MEREDITH, JUNE 27 2008 11:10 AM | PERMALINK

Back in February there was a Threadheads episode all about reusable shopping bags, but I think it's always a great topic to revisit, and I've just discovered a new idea I want to share. Turn your old tank tops into shopping bags with a couple super easy steps! Anitra of the Coffee Pot People blog made up this tutorial, and then I made one sideways so the strap holes are centered and it works fabulously!

Another great recycled tote bag project was in Readymade magazine awhile back - this one...

  • Beret Brained!

POSTED BY TRICIA ROYAL, NOVEMBER 29 2007 11:30 AM | PERMALINK

I'll admit it: I've got berets on the brain lately!

The style has become quite trendy in recent days, but it's really quite a fashion classic, for men, and women: its one of those pieces that will almost always continue to look chic, no matter the current rage.

Of course, i think that making your own beret (or own ANYTHING) is a heck of a lot more creatively and personally satisfying than merely plunking down your cash for one at an urban outfitters (or it's sartorial hipster equivalent). Making stuff...
