  • Cool Website Alert: MetaPostModernKnitting!

POSTED BY LEE MEREDITH, SEPTEMBER 04 2008 04:56 PM | PERMALINK

I just discovered a semi-new knitting website I have to share with you! It's called MetaPostModernKnitting (aka MPMK) and the creators describe the site as "a celebration of fashion-forward and avant-garde knitting." From the about page: "We want to bring you knitting patterns, trend analysis, and news that represents the more artistic, unconventional and forward-thinking realm of knitting." They release an issue full of free patterns and more two times a year (Spring/Summer and...

  • Nerdy Knitting

POSTED BY KENDRA CUNNINGHAM, AUGUST 07 2008 01:33 PM | PERMALINK

As knitting has broken away from its typecast role of strictly a grandma thing, and into a popular and trendy craft, knitting has yielded everything from little knitted foods to inappropriate knitted body parts- all of which are affixed with a little smiley face. But my favorite of these knitted makeshift trends definitely has to be in the category of nerdy knitting. Since I am a self-proclaimed nerd myself, I always gravitated towards nerd fashion whether periodic table t-shirts or wearing a skeleton...

  • Knitting For What You Believe In!

POSTED BY LEE MEREDITH, JULY 03 2008 07:42 PM | PERMALINK

Did you know that back when colonial Americans were protesting against the British for their independence, knitting played a significant role in this revolt? I recently picked up the book Knitting America and was so interested to learn about the history of political knitting. Way before the Revolutionary War actually began, the colonists were fighting for their freedom from the Brits by trying to buy nothing from them, trying to sustain themselves as best they could, by spinning their own yarn and...

  • Vintage Knitting Needle Jewelry!

POSTED BY LEE MEREDITH, JUNE 28 2008 08:00 AM | PERMALINK

I first saw this idea maybe a year ago, and I'm sure it's been around way longer than that, but I finally got around to trying it out yesterday and it's superrad!

It's the same concept as the classic toothbrush bracelet, so the directions are basically the same: put vintage plastic knitting needles in boiling water till they're pliable, then bend them as you choose.

Here is a blog post on diylife about the bracelets, and another on Elliphantom Knits with a basic how-to and some great looking...

  • Interview with Cosette Cornelius-Bates!

POSTED BY LEE MEREDITH, JUNE 25 2008 08:00 AM | PERMALINK

I'm so excited about the release of Knit One, Embellish Too by Cosette Cornelius-Bates (aka Cosy), having been an admirer of her work through her blog for awhile now. Cosy is an amazing accessory designer/knitter, and yarn recycler and spinner. While I know not all you threadheads are knitters, I thought everyone would appreciate Cosy's love of recycling and reusing, as well as the unique style she gives her work with both design choices and embellishment. Even if you have no desire to knit...

  • Beret Brained!

POSTED BY TRICIA ROYAL, NOVEMBER 29 2007 11:30 AM | PERMALINK

I'll admit it: I've got berets on the brain lately!

The style has become quite trendy in recent days, but it's really quite a fashion classic, for men, and women: its one of those pieces that will almost always continue to look chic, no matter the current rage.

Of course, i think that making your own beret (or own ANYTHING) is a heck of a lot more creatively and personally satisfying than merely plunking down your cash for one at an urban outfitters (or it's sartorial hipster equivalent). Making stuff...
